There are currently two main types of structured cabling systems suitable for the home network environment based on cost and flexibility. The systems are known as either Cat 5e or Cat 6 solutions.
Cat 6 is a higher performance cabling system compared to Cat 5e. If installed correctly it can provide higher performance and better immunity to interference depending on the signals being carried. Currently all typical applications function with Cat 5e just as well as with Cat 6. However, the latest version of Ethernet (operating at 10Gbps) will not function on Cat 5e but it may function on Cat 6 for cable lengths up to 30m. The decision between Cat5e and Ca6 is usually based on requirements of the equipment to be connected, personal point of view and cost.
